THE office of the ombudsman for short-term insurance said yesterday it was disturbed by the number of complaints from consumers about motor vehicle warranty contracts — which are bought from dealers at the time of purchase of a vehicle, or when a manufacturer’s warranty on a vehicle is about to expire.
These are marketed as being insurance policies administered by “insurance administrators” and have all the hallmarks of an insurance policy, but may in fact not be insurance polices at all, Brian Martin, the ombudsman, said yesterday.
Mr Martin warned consumers to acquaint themselves fully with the nature of the benefits provided by such contracts and to consider carefully whether the products offered covered their needs.
“Ask questions regarding the product and in particular whether it is underwritten by a registered insurer,” Mr Martin said.
“ If a product is held out as being an insurance policy, make sure that it is underwritten by a registered short- term insurer.”
